The Connected Courtyard
Client: Woonstad Rotterdam
Location: Rotterdam - Bloemhof
Status: Planned for realization May 2025
In the heart of Bloemhof, a new residential complex comprising 70 homes is set to feature a communal courtyard designed to foster connection among neighbors. Drawing inspiration from the concept of 'Buren in verbinding' (The Connected Courtyard), the design envisions two main pathways resembling outstretched arms converging at a central gathering space, symbolizing unity and community.
Accessibility stands at the forefront of the Connected Courtyard's design. Features include:
1. Wheelchair-friendly pathways with ample turning radii
2. Elevated modular vegetable garden beds, a proprietary design by Studio NousNous
3. Herb shelves designed for ease of access
4. A variety of seating options to accommodate diverse needs
5. A coffee corner with an adjacent terrace
6. An activity plaza for communal events
7. Organic walking routes that meander through the space
These elements ensure that the garden serves as a welcoming space for all residents, promoting inclusivity and engagement.
Embracing the principles of biophilic design, the ParkTuin integrates natural elements to enhance well-being and foster a connection to nature. The design employs the 'mystery' pattern, guiding visitors through winding paths that reveal new vistas, much like trails in a forest. This approach not only stimulates curiosity but also encourages exploration and interaction within the space.
Tenants' specific requests, including a fruit tree and spacious shared seating, motivated us to develop multipurpose features. We designed a six-sided movable bench with a built-in, mobile tree planter, optimizing space usage.
The design process was deeply collaborative, involving multiple participatory sessions with future residents and stakeholders. Through creative workshops, feedback was gathered and integrated into the final design, ensuring that the ParkTuin reflects the community's desires and needs. The positive reception of the Definitive Design underscores the success of this inclusive approach.
At the core of the ParkTuin lies the 'connection plaza,' around which three primary zones are organized:
The Terrace: A communal area for coffee and casual meetings
Elevated Vegetation: Spaces for gardening and plant cultivation
The Activity Plaza: An open area for movement and creative expressions
These zones are interconnected by pathways that not only facilitate movement but also embody the design's central theme of connection.
The Connected Courtyard stands as a testament to the power of design in building community. Through thoughtful integration of natural elements, accessibility, and resident input, the garden is poised to become a cherished space that nurtures relationships and well-being.
